43 years and counting

The credit union built for NC local government

“2025 marked an evolution in the life of our credit union. Since our founding in 1983, we’ve been committed to serving the needs of North Carolina local government employees and supporting their communities. Now as Civic Credit Union, we move forward in the strength of that 43-year history with the longtime trust of our members, with modern banking options and financial partnerships that build a better North Carolina.”

Digital Empowerment

Digital empowerment is not about replacing relationships, it’s about enhancing them, providing members with the tools needed to stay connected, informed, and in control with confidence and convenience. This shift is reflected in the strong adoption growth of digital tools such as Card Control+, which saw enrollment rise from 1,968 in 2024 to 195,000 in 2025, giving members greater control over their card transactions and security.

During that same timeframe, enrollment in myScore+ also grew significantly to more than 53,000 members, up from 2,500 the prior year, empowering members with clearer insight into their credit and financial health.

One of the main features I love about the app is when you make a transaction it gives you an alert ... Anytime you make a purchase at any store, you get that alert, you get that notification.

My personal banking needs have evolved and so have the ways we interact with the world. The access to Civic’s online services allows me to bank without interruptions to my day. The credit union is evolving to meet members’ needs.

I love being able to deposit checks anytime, even on the weekend. The mobile deposit is faster at Civic. And the ability to move money in my accounts is convenient, from home or on the road … It’s a different style of banking, and it’s all about convenience.

Housing with purpose

A mission-driven credit union, Civic focuses on helping create economic opportunity in low-income and underserved communities. For some members in these areas, mainstream finance may fall short, limiting access to affordable lending opportunities.

Opening doors to opportunities

We are proud to share that Civic is a Certified Designated Financial Institution (CDFI) by the U.S. Department of Treasury, a status that LGFCU earned in 2014 and has carried over to Civic. Civic is committed to serving members who lack access to loans, equity investments, and/or financial services. When members are given the chance to become homeowners, they start to build generational wealth, which fosters stronger, more resilient communities.

Grant helps boost low-income homeownership through OnTrack

When the Civic Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to the nonprofit OnTrack Financial Education and Counseling in Western North Carolina, the organization used the seed money to launch a program to assist Buncombe County employees seeking homeownership opportunities.

Purchasing your first home is a major milestone in life, and being able to buy a home in the county where they provide public service really makes the moment even more special. Thank you so much for this opportunity! You have made a difference in the lives of local government employees and their families.”

Sybil Tate
Assistant County Manager, Buncombe County

Small business

Small business owners often benefit from creating lasting partnerships with local financial institutions. That’s why Charlotte realtor John Kelly partnered with Civic when he needed to refinance a commercial loan. Mark Litton, Civic’s Assistant Vice President of Member Business Lending, took the time to hear John’s story, to offer a personal connection and recommend loan options that aligned with his business goals.

Civic Member, John Kelly

We had an excellent experience working with Civic Credit Union on a commercial loan. Their communication was outstanding, the process was seamless, and the terms and conditions were better than competitive. What truly set them apart was their genuine interest in understanding both our business objectives and personal goals. We look forward to working with Civic Credit Union again on future commercial opportunities.”

Financial Wellness

Your financial health may impact your overall wellbeing. Each year, Civic teams focus on more ways to help you better understand money, use decision-making tools, and improve your financial future.

Building stronger financial futures

This past year, Civic supported financial wellness education with human resource and employer engagement initiatives and presented to more individual groups of members than ever.

The goal: To provide practical knowledge and tools to help people build a stronger financial future.

Access

Partnering with employees at local government entities helped support existing, local programs to meet members where they are with helpful information to power their financial future.

Education

Civic participated in financial wellness programs that impacted more than 1,000 people who attended 54 presentations at local government locations and online, too. These programs shared important information about creating a spending plan, managing debt, and more.

Engagement

Building financial confidence and wellness starts by showing up and engaging with members with a blend of in-person and online programs. Local government employers have made the connection between financial health and overall wellbeing! And Civic is at the center of it, serving you.

Letters W and M

Support is provided from leadership to host the presentations to expand access to wellness and professional development resources and reinforce the organization’s commitment to employee financial well-being. The sessions supported employee engagement by providing practical tools and relevant information.

CIVIC FCU also hosts our Financial Fridays at least once a month to provide valuable financial wellness education virtually, which allows our employees to take advantage of learning tools to support financial stability. Employees also have access to recordings of each session, which is very convenient and ensures accessibility to this information for all employees. We have seen such a great benefit in integrating CIVIC FCU into our overall benefits and financial wellness programs, including in our countywide employee events, and view CIVIC FCU as a valued partner.

Letters J and S

Financial literacy is a vital component of employee well-being, which is why we partnered with Civic to deliver financial wellness presentations to our workforce. Empowering employees with this knowledge creates a lasting impact far beyond the workplace. When employees feel confident managing their finances, it reduces stress, sharpens focus, and supports stronger performance both at work and at home.

Make an impact

Not a local government employee? You can still support NC communities and join Civic when you become a Friend of the Foundation.

Grant Program

The impact of grants made through Civic and the Civic Foundation provide more than financial support. The grants help open doors, offer freedom, build confidence, and empower individuals to pursue opportunities they might not otherwise have. In this video, hear directly from a grant recipient about the real-world impact Civic Foundation grants provide, and their ability to make a difference in the community.

Honoring public service

The best part of being a Civic Fellow? Sharing insights and building long-term relationships with other local government leaders that strengthen his own community, says Joey Webb Jr.

When you’re in a small county it’s not easy to come up with travel and tuition money … for a program as in-depth as Fellows. Thanks to Civic, folks from all over the state are able to participate … and it makes such a difference to communities.”

Partnerships

Partnerships create impact far beyond financial services. They help to create strong outcomes for local communities through support of local organizations.

Meeting real, local needs for strong outcomes

Each Civic partnership is an intentional choice to help local governments build strong and resilient hometowns and cities. They open doors of opportunity through local organizations to help improve lives. And, local partners help to make sure that resources meet real, local needs.

In 2025, Civic partnerships and outreach created impact for the following categories: local government, public safety, community, and education.

we built this credit union for local government employees and volunteers and their families.

Over the years a lot has changed: our members’ needs, the ways we serve, the ways we bank, and the ways we connect. But what hasn't changed is our commitment to our community.

We became Civic to serve you better in a modern and connected world with modern and connected banking. So you can love your credit union the way you love local gov.

Civic = local government

Civic member, Matthew B.

I love North Carolina local government because it's something that's tangible. We're there for people on their best day [and] we're there for people on their worst day. Whenever you go to a park, you can say, hey, we helped build that playground. And we're also there whenever someone calls because they need help. So that's why I love local government. It's neighbors helping neighbors and it's where leaders show up.

You can work in the mountains, you can work at the beach, you can work in the local cities if you want. So, you can not only get a job that you love, but you can get a job where you love being in the environment and in the community.

I love North Carolina local government because of the difference it makes in our community. I don't just work there, I live there, and it feels like it's not just a career, it's a calling.

The best thing about being a part of local government that I did not expect was another family, another place where others all have the same common goals. We have the same thing in mind and, actually, the same thing at heart, and that's serving others.
