Volunteer Committees

Civic was built by members like you. As owners of the credit union, some of our members also help provide oversight by serving on volunteer committees. Learn more about how members serve at Civic, and why member volunteerism matters.

Civic pattern

Why do credit unions have volunteer committees?

Everyone benefits when members participate at Civic Credit Union. The Volunteer Committees are one way to help accomplish that goal. Members who serve on committees provide an important and additional layer of oversight and accountability for the credit union. They make sure that decisions continue to be in the best interest of members and ensure the success of the credit union.

Transparency

Committee members review documents for accuracy and accountability

Service

Selected volunteers serve in important roles for fellow members

Trust

Volunteer committees help maintain Civic’s cooperative principles

Civic members can be selected to serve on the following committees

Supervisory Committee

Members who serve on this volunteer committee inspect the credit union’s:

  • Records for accuracy
  • Assets for security
  • Procedures for proper handling and use of funds

The committee uses the services of a certified public accountant (CPA) and oversees clerical and auditing personnel hired by the committee to complete its audit responsibilities. The committee members work to ensure that the credit union aligns with the value of self-governance and autonomy, part of the fourth Cooperative Principle, “Autonomy and Independence.”

Civic members who serve in on the Supervisory Committee include:

  • Amy Bason (Raleigh)
  • Ryan Draughn (Sanford)
  • Emily Lucas (Wake Forest)
  • Justin Merritt (Shelby)
  • Shawn Purvis (Apex)

Loan Review Committee

Civic members who serve on the Loan Review Committee (LRC) look at loan appeals that have been filed by members for:

  • Denied loan application
  • Denied credit card application

It is important to note that not all credit unions offer this Loan Review Committee (LRC). At Civic, the LRC has the authority to uphold the original decision to deny the credit card or loan, or can decide to approve the credit card or loan. The actions taken by the LRC are tied to the second Cooperative Principle, “Democratic Member Control”, whereby members are empowered to control a cooperative and participate in its decision-making.

Civic members who serve in this role include:
Each committee member serves a two-year term and is elected by the Civic Board of Directors.

  • Jim Baker (Chapel Hill)
  • Mike Eubank (Kill Devil Hills)
  • Diana Harris (Cary)
  • Nancy Held (Raleigh)
  • Pam Hurdle (Hertford)
  • Dale Johnson (Raleigh)
  • Nancy Medlin (Garner)
  • Charles Murray (Louisburg)
  • Jean Stowers (Surf City)
  • Sam Tingler (Holly Springs)
  • Charles Weber (Washington State)
  • Mark Williams (Wake Forest)
Justin Merrit, Volunteer on the Supervisory Committee

Volunteering with Civic has given me a voice in shaping the very financial services and products I depend on. It’s more than just oversight—it’s about ensuring every member’s needs are heard and protected. Knowing I’m part of a team that stands up for more than 400,000 fellow members inspires me every day. There’s no better way to truly have a say in your financial future than by lending your time and expertise to help guide the credit union forward.

Emily Lucas, Civic Member and Supervisory Committee Volunteer

As a Deputy County Manager, I’ve dedicated my career to responsible stewardship of public resources. That same commitment to accountability and service drives my work as Chair of Civic’s Supervisory Committee. By volunteering, we ensure every member’s voice is heard—and that the credit union’s operations remain transparent, secure, and aligned with our shared community values. I believe that when we bring our expertise and passion for public service to Civic, we help shape a financial future that truly benefits every member.
