Civic Credit Union Shares Effort to Protect Members and Educate North Carolina Communities During Fraud Awareness Week

RALEIGH, NC – During International Fraud Awareness Week, Civic Credit Union is joining efforts across North Carolina and the financial services industry to protect members and educate communities about the growing threat of fraud. Through proactive member outreach, enhanced security tools, and collaboration across the financial and technology sectors, Civic is helping individuals recognize, report and prevent scams before they cause harm.

“Fraudsters are evolving – and so are we,” said Dwayne Naylor, President and CEO of Civic Credit Union. “At Civic, we believe security is a shared responsibility. Our mission is not only to safeguard our members’ assets but to equip them with the knowledge and confidence to protect themselves in an evolving digital world.”

Across the financial services industry, fraudulent activity continues to rise, from account takeovers and phishing attempts to more sophisticated schemes that use AI-generated messages and voice cloning to deceive consumers. Civic is taking a comprehensive approach to fraud prevention through strategic initiatives that emphasize awareness, protection, and continued partnership.

During Fraud Awareness Week and throughout the year, Civic encourages its members and the public to adopt simple, proven practices to secure their financial information:

  • Never share login credentials or one-time codes. Legitimate institutions will never request this information.
  • Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) on all financial, email, and other related accounts.
  • Monitor accounts and credit reports regularly to detect suspicious activity early.
  • Verify before you click. Avoid links or attachments in unsolicited messages, even those that may appear familiar at first glance.
  • Stay informed. Visit Civic’s Fraud Prevention page for the latest scam alerts and further protection tips.

Civic’s focus on fraud prevention reflects its larger mission to build stronger, more secure communities through innovation and education. The credit union’s approach to digital transformation ensures that every new tool and technology is grounded in safety and transparency.

“Security isn’t a one-time initiative, it's an everyday commitment,” shared Sandy Steward, Civic’s EVP of Technology and Digital Services. “By combining advanced technology with consistent member education, we can make fraud prevention a true community effort.”
