Civic Credit Union provides member update of transition to independent Credit Union
RALEIGH, NC – Civic Credit Union is sharing details about the upcoming transition of its member accounts currently held with Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) to Civic Credit Union, which will officially take place June 3, 2025. This update will help members understand what’s changing, what’s staying the same, and what to expect as Civic continues its service as a fully independent credit union—built specifically for local government employees and their families since 2018.
Current members of LGFCU who have accounts with LGFCU—which has operated in cooperation with State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) for the last 42 years—will transition on June 3 to Civic. Members will see this transition referred to as “Civic Day.” “Local government employees are the backbone of our communities,” said Dwayne Naylor, Civic’s Chief Executive Officer. “Civic was created to show up for them. This transition is about deepening that commitment—not changing it. Members will continue to be served with the same care, while gaining access to even better tools and expanded services built specifically for them.”
For LGFCU members, this transition to Civic means everyday banking will remain familiar, now supported by Civic’s “All Ways” approach. Members can access Civic however, whenever, and wherever they need—whether in person, online, or on the go. The shift also creates new opportunities for services and tools designed specifically for local government employees and their families.
Civic recognizes four key areas that are critical for members to understand during this transition, and is committed to addressing each with clarity and transparency:
- SECU Separation
LGFCU is officially transitioning away from SECU to join with Civic, and to operate independently, on June 3rd.
- Branch Access
Members who prefer in-person banking can visit Civic’s 11 branches across North Carolina, or access thousands of CO-OP Shared Branches nationwide—including over 100 locations in North Carolina, as well as thousands nationwide. Familiar locations include Allegacy, Members, Truliant, and Marine Credit Unions. In addition, members have access to a broad network of fee-free ATMs, including CashPoints®, for withdrawals and deposits. Civic reimburses up to $20/month in ATM fees, no matter where the ATM is located. Unlike SECU, which is limited to North Carolina, these new options give members greater flexibility and access wherever they are.
- Cash & Transactions
Direct deposits, scheduled payments, and money transfers will move from LGFCU to Civic with no interruption. Most members will retain their current account and routing numbers. For members with unique situations, Civic is providing one-on-one outreach to provide direction and support to ensure a smooth transition.
- Member Loyalty
Civic was created to serve the same group that LGFCU has always served: local government employees and their families. These public servants are essential to North Carolina communities, and they deserve a financial institution that is built entirely around their needs. Civic exists to serve them. That mission remains unchanged. In addition, Civic recently introduced a market-leading 5.50 APY% Certificate of Deposit (CD) rate for members, reinforcing its commitment to delivering exceptional value to members. Civic continues as a not-for-profit, member-first credit union, where the direction is shaped by the people it serves.
“Civic is not just another credit union—it is a purpose-built financial partner for local government employees. This transition for Civic presents an unparalleled opportunity to spotlight how our mission, services, and vision set Civic apart,” said Naylor.
