Civic Credit Union officially launches as independent Credit Union

RALEIGH, NC – Civic Credit Union launched a fully independent financial institution this week, unlocking expanded benefits and enhanced services, with a stronger commitment to reinvesting in its members. Marking a new chapter for North Carolina’s local government employees, Civic Credit Union, which serves local government employees and their families across the state, reinforced its commitment and its focus on helping those who serve their communities achieve financial well-being.

Civic Credit Union was established to exclusively serve North Carolina’s local government employees and their families. As of June 3, Civic now operates independently from State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) after more than four decades of shared operations under LGFCU - giving members more access to banking tools than they previously had.

“This isn’t just about changing systems—it’s about changing what’s possible for our members,” said Dwayne Naylor, CEO of Civic. “We’re proud to take this step forward and continue building a stronger foundation that allows us to better serve our members.”

Civic’s independence allows for the ability to reinvest more directly in its members. In 2024 alone, LGFCU paid $63 million in annual fees to SECU—funds that will now remain within Civic and go directly toward member benefits. This reinvestment will support:

  • Ability to deposit cash in 3,500 retail locations in NC
  • Enhanced mobile app functionality
  • New savings and lending options tailored to members’ needs
  • Continued investment in NC local government employees via partnerships with local government-focused organizations

In-person availability remains at Civic’s 11 statewide branches, or in communities across North Carolina through CO-OP Shared Branches and fee-free ATMs nationwide.

While the core systems have transitioned, Civic continues to support members through post-launch adjustments—including help with card activation, account access, and use of the new app. Members can reach Civic’s Experience Center team 24/7 by phone at 844-772-4842, or connect via email at memberservices@civicfcu.org and live chat on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.

“When we embarked on this transition, we realized that more than 80% of our members already prefer to use digital platforms for banking through our websites and app,” said Naylor. “We welcome the remaining percentage of our members to learn these user-friendly and highly accessible tools to make their banking experience better through the resources on our website and to continue using our own in-person Civic branches that will remain available.”

The launch also comes with operational improvements, including streamlined account continuity. Members have retained the same account and routing numbers, and direct deposits and recurring payments have transferred with minimal interruption. Civic has prioritized one-on-one outreach to any members needing individualized support.
